Adam stuffed his wet, pretty much ruined clothes into a small garbage bag he’d found beneath the bathroom sink. Like many of the summer homes dotting Long Island, this one boasted mostly suites, with each bedroom having its own bathroom and sitting area for guests or families’ convenience.

He cinched the belt Martha had given him one notch tighter. She had a good eye for size and had said her son-in-law’s jeans would only be a little big on him, and she’d been spot on. The long-sleeved Henley and flannel shirt he wore over it fit perfectly. Unfortunately, he’d have to stuff his feet back into his own waterlogged shoes when it was time to go—he glanced at his watch—which needed to be soon.

While he didn’t want to linger too long with Hank and Martha, desperate to keep danger from coming to their door, they had to wait for Pat to arrive. Before changing, he’d used the landline to call Seaport Fire and Rescue. Thankfully, Pat had been there and was supposedly on his way after a quick stop to pick up a car seat for the baby.

His heart stuttered at the thought of the infant. He’d had such a difficult time with her in the beginning, couldn’t even look at her. Not because he didn’t like children—he actually did—but because he’d been so afraid to fail her. Every time his gaze landed on her, it was a reminder that she might die on his watch, that he might not be able to protect her. But now, all he wanted was to get back to her, see her, touch her, assure himself she was safe. The fact that they’d almost walked out of Maya’s room before they’d found her knotted his gut. What would have happened to her?

He did a mental head shake to clear his mind, had to if he was going to think clearly enough to function and get them out of this mess. Though the guilt he suffered had him shouldering the blame for their current situation, he knew it wasn’t all his doing. Or was it? If he hadn’t gone after the corrupt senator five years ago when a junior partner at Adam’s firm had insisted she believed he was hiring hits, after the same woman had been accosted, would any of them be in the position they were in right now?

Would Alessandra and his child still be with him? He had no way to know that. No way to know what might have become of them under different circumstances. He’d done what he felt was right, and Alessandra had supported him completely, had encouraged him to do the right thing and try to stop the senator from hiring out any more hits. Neither of them could have anticipated the outcome...that she’d end up at the top of his list.

Perhaps it was time to stop dwelling on a past he couldn’t change and start looking toward his future, a concept he hadn’t dared consider for five long years.
